Why a High Electric Bill Could Indicate AC Problems

Modern air conditioners are highly sophisticated systems that minimize electricity consumption. That said, even a minor malfunction can throw the system out of whack and cause usage to skyrocket. For this reason, HVAC experts encourage tracking your electric bills from month to month and year to year. That way, you know when a spike has occurred and can schedule diagnostics.

Airflow Obstructions

If you notice your AC struggling to keep up, it may not just be the weather. It could be blocked airflow. An AC is most efficient when the static air pressure is in an optimal range for the system. If pressure is too high, the system will struggle and use more energy. Clogged air filters are the most common cause of airflow obstructions. You should check your HVAC filter at least once a month and replace it as needed. Another potential issue is dust accumulation in the ducts. While it can take years, the buildup can eventually get severe enough that it affects airflow.

Condenser Coil Performance

The condenser coil is outdoors, and it facilitates the heat transfer from the inside to the outside. Dirt and other grime can build up on the coil over time. It acts like an insulator, which makes the process less efficient, and your energy use goes up. It’s also important to maintain a perimeter around the outdoor compressor unit. Over time, a buildup of leaves, branches, and other debris can interfere with airflow and undermine the system’s ability to operate efficiently.

Evaporator Coil Performance

The evaporator coil is indoors, and it facilitates the removal of heat energy from the air. While it’s not subject to as much dirt as the condenser coil, it can build up grime as well. That has a similar effect on the overall energy efficiency of the system. The other issue is that evaporator coils can be prone to microbial growth, which serves as an insulator as well. If there’s significant growth, you may notice musty odors whenever the AC cycles on.

Refrigerant Leaks

While refrigerant leaks can be catastrophic events, they’re often not. Micro-leaks are quite common, and they won’t stop the AC from functioning. They will, however, undermine the efficiency. A leaking AC may run for extended periods. The system can begin to overheat, at which point it may short cycle. Leaks can also cause issues like frozen evaporator coils, warm air, hissing sounds, or ice buildup.

Leaky Ductwork

As ducts get older, the seals between the duct sections can wear out. That leakage affects comfort, energy efficiency, and indoor air quality. Your system will have to run longer and harder to meet the cooling demand. You may also notice uneven cooling and turn up the thermostat setting in response.
